On March 22nd I received a letter from Humboldt Sponsors informing me that Project Linus Humboldt had been awarded the grant that we had applied for this year.  Our chapter will be celebrating its fourth year serving Humboldt County’s children in need of a blanket hug. Humboldt Sponsors has funded our requests for three of those four years. They have approved our request each time we made one! It felt wonderful to see the smiling faces of our chapter’s Blanketeers at our last meeting.  We were able to meet maskless given the mask mandate changes and the downward spiral of the virus.  It is important to see facial expressions, to not worry about being in the world without  getting sick and to be able to be physically closer to one another.  It all feels wonderful……something we could not do during the many months of the global pandemic. The pandemic changed our chapter’s operations, but it did not daunt the commitment our Blanketeers have to providing beautiful, kid friendly blankets to children in our community. 43 blankets came in…

Project Linus Humboldt is fortunate to have community supporters.  One of those supporters, Coast Central Credit Union, has provided an annual donation to our chapter which has helped us make over 1,400  blankets since May 2018. In this new year, CCCU employees participated in a fundraiser for us.  They designate various non-profits and have a Friday each month where employees can wear jeans if they donate $5.00 to the designated non-profit for that month. Yesterday, I was informed that $600.00 was generated last Friday for Project Linus Humboldt by CCCU employees with the additional support from CCCU!  That is a lot of jeans and a lot of support. By the time this month is over, our chapter will have delivered over 50 blankets to children living in our community in need a of a blanket hug. Actually, I have more requests than I do blankets, but it always seems to work out and we are able to get blankets where they need to be. In fact, it has been a busy blanket year.  Since Jan. 1st, 2021, we have delivered 447 blankets! We have provided blankets to newborns and to teens struggling with loss, illness, and family challenges. We realize that their needs often go beyond delivering a blanket, but the feedback that our chapter receives tells us…

At our last meeting in September, our talented blanket makers made windowsill blocks. The idea is to think about what you might see if you look out of a window.  You might see: ladybugs, owls, dogs, houses, bear and maybe oceans with sea creatures!  Or, maybe you will spy a boy knight in shining armor. I have lost count of how many times I have said to my dedicated group of Blanketeers:  “I could not do any of this without you all!” Sometimes when I say it, I find myself getting a little weepy because I continue to be touched by their remarkable blanket “spirit” and their generous blanket contributions. In the last month, 41 blankets were made and donated to our chapter. In that same month, I delivered 43 blankets to local agencies. Our chapter is fortunate to get periodic donations of batting, fabric and yarn. A recent donation yielded many, pre-cut 5 inch squares including one with little gnomes and one with sushi graphics.   I made a blanket with a few of the gnome squares and then I brought the rest of them along with the sushi squares to a recent meeting of our Humboldt Chapter. We have been offering up fabric to one another at our meetings and it has been fun to see what others can do with fabric remnants.  At the end of this particular meeting, I noticed that all the gnome and sushi squares were gone.  I…

On June 26th we met at our new location in Old Town, Eureka: Buttons. They gave us a warm welcome which felt very good! Buttons has a large sewing studio which is perfect for our monthly sewing events.  36 blankets were made, presented and donated to our chapter at this meeting.  All of the blankets were absolutely fabulous and stitched with love. The Blanketeers at this meeting are all vaccinated so we felt relaxed and quite happy to be connected again for our monthly meetings.  I am quite proud of our Blanketeers for continuing their blanket making during the pandemic.  Their commitment to the mission of Project Linus is remarkable…

This month of May marks our 3rd birthday for Humboldt Project Linus.  Who knew that the small, but mighty group of Blanketeers who attended our 1st meeting would make 1,100 blankets in three years and deliver 1,072 of them? Let’s not forget that during that time we experienced a global pandemic which greatly affected how blanket deliveries are made. Fortunately, our Humboldt PL Chapter will resume meeting on our birthday month.  We are looking forward to our monthly meetings, sharing blanket projects and providing blankets to children in our community who need a blanket hug. Humboldt Project Linus has received funding from two local organizations this spring:  Coast Central Credit Union (CCCU) and Humboldt Sponsors.  In both cases, we received what we had requested: $500.  CCCU has sponsored us for the past three years and Humboldt Sponsors has provided funding for the past two years.  These funds have been a tremendous help to our mission which is to make and deliver new, homemade blankets to children in our community who need a blanket hug.
